Feeling obliged to comment after seeing twitter link. It my have reopened just in time for the Olympics, but sadly I was not impressed when i visited, shortly after completion of restoration. It is only a short ridaway on the bus from me, I was so disappointed will not be going for a long time History painted over and sanitised. to chase money from the wedding industry. Visit Forty Hall Enfield, and make up you own mind or google.
the very front facade of the Gun and Magpie pub is now all that remains, and i presume that even that will be gone tomorrow, and within a few months we shall see some shiny new flats sat here instead.
it is sad to see this pub disappear, not that i ever visited it on anything like a regular basis, but more for the fact that the Gun and Magpie was an easy landmark to spot, representing a marker in a journey and proving easy for giving directions from.
sadly, it is becoming more and more common to see Christmas products in shops earlier and earlier each year. I didn't, however, expect to be wished merry christmas by an A-board outside a car park in enfield town
i still can't believe that a week ago Enfield was the heart of trouble kicking off as riots took over the capital for a second night, it felt bizarre and terrifying that this could be happening in my home town and that the few clips that were circulating on the news were of places that i walk past virtually on a daily basis, so familiar, yet so different, transformed by the presence of riot police and organised chaos
thankfully things seemed to have calmed down now, but last week, amidst all that was going on, i tore myself away from the computer screen and wrote a short poem on the feelings that had been stirred inside me, this week, as situations were looking worse, i began expanding on this idea, and on others, to produce a few pieces of music to reflect the times and the tension
this piece is still slightly unfinished, it needs a little more tweaking and polishing to get it up to scratch, but i wanted to put it out before the memories fade
I am fiercely proud of my home town, Enfield is part of who I am, I am a part of Enfield, And an attack on Enfield, Is an attack on me.
As the tension mounts, And ill feeling hangs heavy in the air, I can't shake the involuntary feeling of excitement, Mixing with sickness.
Tonight we make history together, As I pray that everything historic, Everything beautiful, Everything and everyone I love, Doesn't burn down to the ground.
It is all eyes on us tonight, As we bunker down in our homes, And make it a night to remember, With our updates and our outrage, Trending, reporting and cowering, As the same four clips of footage, Repeat over and over on Sky News.
the town is awake, rearing it's sleeping head and thrusting it's denizens into the light, a community that glistens with necessity under the new spring sky, and a sun that shines regardless on a day that's hardly started.
a whimsical poem, thought up as i neared work this morning.
a presumably shut down and forgotten about little local store found whilst wandering the back streets of Enfield Lock and enjoying the sunshine
i think i may have bought penny sweets from here as a kid, having gone to the shop with mylittle brother's mate's little sister
i remember her choosing a handful of penny sweets and scoffing a few extra when the shopkeeper wasn't looking, i was far too straight laced to copy her behaviour
